Arequipa had a serious breakfast long before brunch arrived. Adobo, pork left to marinate overnight and cooked in clay pots, is by tradition eaten on Sunday mornings, and since the pandemic some kitchens have started serving it at lunch as well.12
The cafés offer something lighter, and most of the brunch cafés are in the Centro Histórico, on and around Calle Santa Catalina. Haykuy love opens first, at 07:00. Outside the Centro, Huayruro Peruvian Coffee Shop is in San Lázaro and Le Petit Café in Yanahuara.
Local tip: On Sunday, Kafi Wasi, Eco Brunch and Mi Kcao are closed; Haykuy love opens at 07:30, Huayruro at 08:30 and Banawa Juice Bar at 09:00.
Where these cafés are: Centro Histórico (6), San Lázaro (1), Yanahuara (1).

The meat is usually pork loin or leg, marinated with garlic, ají panca or rocoto, and vinegar or chicha de guiñapo, a corn drink of the region, then fried and finished in a clay pot with its marinade. Some cooks bake it instead, brushed with lard and ají panca.3 It comes with boiled or baked camote (sweet potato) and pan de tres puntas, also called tres cachetes, to mop up the sauce.3
Tea on the side is often piteado, with a splash of pisco.3 The adobo expert Betzabé de Diván has promoted a Día del Adobo Arequipeño to keep the family custom going.1
Cayma, a district about 3 km from the center, holds an adobo festival on its main plaza.7 In August 2022 it opened at 06:00, the first diners arrived around 05:00, and by about 09:30 most stalls had sold out; a plate averaged S/ 16 and came with two panes de tres puntas.2 Each stall cooked about 200 servings.2
The 2024 edition, on 4 August for the city's 484th anniversary, ran 06:00–13:00 in front of the district municipality, with 15 picanterías taking part. Plates cost from S/ 15 and came with pan de tres puntas and a small glass of anisado, an anise spirit.4
Haykuy love, at Calle Santa Catalina 500, opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 07:30 on Sunday. Banawa Juice Bar, at No. 211, opens at 08:00, and La Despensa, at No. 302, is also a bakery.
Eco Brunch, at Simón Bolívar 429, serves 08:30–16:00 from Monday to Saturday, with outdoor tables and card payment. Kafi Wasi, at Francisco Bolognesi 216, opens at 08:30 from Monday to Saturday; Forbes Perú singles out both its beans and its food.5 Mi Kcao chocolates y cafe rooftop, at Calle Ugarte 314, opens at 09:00 and has vegan dishes.
