Intramuros is the walled city the Spanish built after Legazpi declared Manila the capital of the colony in 1571. Its walls, 3–5 km long, enclose about 64 hectares, and the Intramuros Administration, created in 1979, regulates the use, height and look of new construction; bahay na bato (stone-and-wood house) is the default style.1

The Battle of Manila in February and March 1945 left about 5% of the district's structures standing. San Agustín Church, completed in 1607, was the only major building inside the walls to survive and is one of four UNESCO-listed Baroque Churches of the Philippines.1 Cafés gather by Manila Cathedral, on Cabildo and Beaterio Streets, and along General Luna Street.

Local tip: The e-trike loop, ₱25 a ride in 2024, saves the walk between the cathedral cafés and Papa Kape in Fort Santiago on a hot afternoon.6
