Porto's transport wakes before most of its cafés. The metro normally starts at 06:00.1 Campanhã, at the eastern end of the city, is the station for Intercidades and Alfa Pendular trains to Lisbon.2 Since 20 July 2022 it has also had an intermodal terminal linking coaches with the metro and trains, and Rede Expressos moved its Porto coaches there that November.3
That is where an early coffee is easiest to find. Campanhã has the most cafés open by 06:00, followed by Marquês & Paranhos, Aliados & Clérigos and Bolhão & Santa Catarina. First to open is Rainha do Pão Quente at 42 Rua da Estação, from 05:45, Tuesday to Sunday.
Local tip: On Sundays, plan ahead: Rainha do Pão Quente opens at 05:45, Foguete at 06:00 and Doce Alto at 06:30, while Muralhas do Olival, Café Batalha and Bom Gosto stay closed.
Where these cafés are: Campanhã (4), Bolhão & Santa Catarina (2), Marquês & Paranhos (2), Aliados & Clérigos (2), Ribeira & Sé (1), Bonfim (1).
Nothing matches those filters here. See all cafés in Porto.
Rua da Estação and Rua de Justino Teixeira have the early counters. 3 Doces at 4 Rua da Estação opens at 06:00 on weekdays and 07:00 at weekends, and stays open until 22:00 on weekdays.
On Rua de Justino Teixeira, Metro Café at 17 opens at 06:00 Monday to Saturday. Foguete at 45 opens at 06:00 every day except Saturday, when it is closed, and serves until 00:00.
In the center, 06:00 openings are scattered rather than grouped. Muralhas do Olival, a pão quente confeitaria at 121 Campo dos Mártires da Pátria, opens Monday to Saturday at 06:00, as does Café Batalha at 180 Rua de Augusto Rosa. Bom Gosto, in Bolhão & Santa Catarina, also opens at 06:00 from Monday to Saturday.
Café Brasil at 242 Rua da Madeira opens at 06:00 on weekdays but not until 08:00 at weekends. In Matosinhos, Confeitaria Henrique Carvalho opens at 06:30 on weekdays.
North of the center, Doce Alto at 250 Praça Marquês de Pombal opens at 06:00 Monday to Saturday and 06:30 on Sundays, closing at 20:00. Confeitaria Pará in Paranhos opens at 06:00 Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.
If 07:00 is early enough, the choice widens. Confeitaria Chicana at 36 Avenida de Rodrigues de Freitas in Bonfim opens at 07:00 every day, Sundays included, and Confeitaria Labareda at 662 Avenida de Fernão de Magalhães does the same from Monday to Saturday. In Paranhos, Confeitaria Doce Alto at 2190 Rua de Costa Cabral opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.
Specialty coffee bars start later: Canvas on Avenida de Rodrigues de Freitas at 08:00, Combi Coffee and Fábrica Coffee Roasters at 09:00.
The early order is a cimbalino, Porto's word for an espresso, taken from the Italian Cimbali machines; Café Progresso, founded in 1899, was one of the first cafés in the city to have one.4 Ask for it curto (short) or cheio (fuller), depending on how much water you want in the shot.5
For a little milk, ask for a pingo, the Porto name for an espresso with a drop of milk.67 Some counters also pour a café com cheirinho, an espresso with a splash of bagaço, the strongest of the Portuguese aguardentes (grape spirits).7
