The city center is Kigali's business district in Nyarugenge, marked by Kigali City Tower, a 20-storey tower completed in 2011 on the site of a former central bus station.1 Offices fill most of the tower, with shops on the ground, lower-ground and top floors and a restaurant on the roof.1 Kiyovu, beside the center, is a residential quarter of tree-lined streets and spacious houses, popular with diplomats and long-term residents and a short walk from downtown.2
Kivu Noir's city branch sits inside Norrsken House, Indabo has a garden compound on KN 54 St, and Rooftop Ikawa sits on the roof of an office building on KN 41 St.34
Local tip: On a Monday, when Baso is closed, go to Kivu Noir at Norrsken House instead: it opens at 07:00 every day.9

On KN 6 Ave, Hôtel des Mille Collines, built by the Belgian airline Sabena in 1973, sheltered 1,268 people during the 1994 genocide; its manager then, Paul Rusesabagina, inspired the film Hotel Rwanda, which was shot mostly in South Africa and does not show the hotel. It is now a four-star hotel with 112 rooms.8
In Kiyovu, Baso Pâtissier at 16 KN 47 Street is the work of Bruno Basomingera, a Belgian-trained pastry chef who opened it in January 2017 and makes Belgian and French pastry; Matadi is its signature chocolate cake.9 At Café Indabo on KN 54 Street, seating is mostly outdoors, with a treehouse and swings, an art gallery and a craft boutique in the same compound, and coffee from the Kula Fellowship.3
