Holland Village began as a kampung and takes its name from Holland Road, said to have been named in 1907 after Hugh Holland, an architect and amateur actor.1 In the 1950s the houses of Chip Bee Gardens were built beside it as married quarters for the British military, and from the 1990s shops and restaurants moved in as Orchard and Tanglin became prime residential areas.1

Dempsey Hill is a former British barracks turned dining precinct; it housed the Ministry of Defence and the Central Manpower Base from 1972 until 1989.2 one-north, a research and technology park launched in December 2001, has its own weekday cafés in the lobbies of its towers.4

Local tip: Pair an early walk in the Botanic Gardens, open from 05:00, with breakfast at Baker And Cook on Jalan Merah Saga, which opens at 07:30.
