Singapore has had free public Wi-Fi for two decades. Wireless@SG reached its first hotspots on 1 December 2006, and its venues include cafés, restaurants, fast-food outlets and other public places.1 In 2016 the government announced speeds of 5 Mbit/s, up from 2 Mbit/s, and a doubling of hotspots to 20,000.1
The network you join now is called Wireless@SGx, and M1, one of its operators, promises at least 5 Mbps per user, free of charge.2 A café's own Wi-Fi is often much faster: at Clap Café in Waterloo Centre, a test in October 2026 measured 228 Mbps.4
Local tip: Set up Wireless@SGx while you still have mobile data, since the one-time password arrives by SMS; once installed, the profile works for a year.2

Connecting to Wireless@SGx
IMDA, the government's infocomm agency, publishes setup guides for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, for phones with local or foreign SIM cards and for devices without one.3 M1's setup sends a one-time password by SMS to a local mobile number, mobile data works during setup, and the profile then lasts one year before it needs renewing.2
For laptops and tablets without a SIM, the Wireless@SG app creates the profile after asking for a Singapore NRIC or FIN and a mobile number.1
Balestier Road and Jalan Besar
Little India and Jalan Besar have the most cafés with Wi-Fi, but Balestier Road has the tightest run: Balance Coffee at No. 207, open 07:30–20:00 on weekdays, a second Balance Coffee at No. 453, and Tyca at No. 355, open daily 08:30–18:30. Xiang Taiwanese Dessert and Food is a little north at 224 Upper Thomson Road.
Around Jalan Besar, The Black Sheep Cafe at 18 Norris Road, The Community Roastery & Cafe at 38 Hamilton Road, Brunches Cafe at 96 Rangoon Road and L'etoile at 160 Owen Road all have Wi-Fi. Banchong Cafe at 1 Kallang Junction opens on weekdays only, 08:30–18:00, while MEME Bistro Bar on MacKenzie Road runs until 22:30.
Waterloo Street, LASALLE and the east
Clap Café sits under an HDB block at Waterloo Centre, 261 Waterloo Street, and opens 08:30–19:00. Some seats have plugs, though not all.4 In February 2026 its toffee nut latte cost S$7.5
Working Title, at 1 McNally Street on the LASALLE College of the Arts campus, is a large, sunlit café run by The Black Hole Group.5 Nearby, Alchemy at 128 Prinsep Street opens on weekdays only, 08:30–18:00, and Cheerful Goat Cafe from 07:00 daily. In the east, Staple Food at 196 Joo Chiat Road has Wi-Fi.
Seat limits and evening sessions
Some cafés cap tables at busy times: Syip, on Owen Road, applies a 70-minute dining limit during peak periods.5 Weekday afternoons are the easy slot, and at Clap Café there should be seats on an average weekday afternoon.5
For an evening session, Ginger.Lily at 333 Orchard Road is open until 01:00 every day, The Reading Room at 19 Bukit Pasoh Road until 23:30, Desert Dessert in the Bukit Merah area until 23:00, and Penny University in Kampong Glam until 22:00 from Wednesday to Friday.
