Katong was plantation land from the 1820s, growing cotton, coconut and gambier, and from the late 19th century the seaside home of wealthy villas.2 Reclamation of the east coast from 1966 to 1985 moved the shore away and took the Katong jetty with it.2 Joo Chiat Road, once Confederate Estate Road, was renamed in 1917 after Chew Joo Chiat, the district's richest landowner, who was of Peranakan descent and gave the road to the municipality.1
Developers lined his divided land with Peranakan shophouses, and in 2011 Joo Chiat became Singapore's first Heritage Town.1 The cafés follow two roads: Joo Chiat Road, which runs from Geylang Serai down to Marine Parade Road, and East Coast Road, which crosses it.1
Local tip: Chin Mee Chin opens at 08:00 and is closed on Mondays, so go early on a weekday; if you want coffee first, Common Man on Joo Chiat Road opens at 07:30.

East Coast Road was Katong's shopping and entertainment strip in the 1950s and 1960s, and the district is still known for Katong laksa and Peranakan restaurants in shophouses.2 Peranakan kaya is flavored with pandan, which turns it green; Hainanese kaya gets its brown tint from caramelized sugar.5
