Sitting outside in Singapore usually means sitting under something. Stamford Raffles' town plan of 1822 required each house to have a verandah open as a continuous covered passage along the street, and that walkway, the five-foot way, a translation of the Malay kaki lima, became a fixture of the shophouse city.1 It was meant for pedestrians but soon filled with hawkers, shopfronts and storage.1
The weather decides the rest. Nights rarely fall below 23–25°C and days rarely pass 31–33°C, mean relative humidity is around 82%, and rain falls on about 171 days a year.2 In the inter-monsoon months, late March to May and October to November, thunderstorms, at times severe, break in the afternoon and early evening.2
Local tip: In April, May, October and November, plan outdoor coffee for the morning: inter-monsoon thunderstorms tend to arrive in the afternoon and early evening.2

Open-air kopi in Tanjong Pagar and on Beach Road
Tanjong Pagar has the most cafés with outdoor seating, largely because of the drink stalls at Maxwell Food Centre, 1 Kadayanallur Street. Caracara at 77 Neil Road adds tables outside, and Bearded Bella on Craig Road opens at 07:30 every day.
On Beach Road, YY Kafei Dian at No. 37 has outdoor tables, and Fahrenheit Specialty Coffee sets two tall tables on the pavement outside the Spa Club at No. 75.4 Smoking is not part of the deal: it has been banned at all coffee shops since July 2006 except in designated corners, NEA stopped taking applications for new corners in June 2017, and fewer than 400 remained at food outlets in December 2024.3
Shophouse pavements in Jalan Besar and Joo Chiat
Little India and Jalan Besar come next, level with Bras Basah, then the river quays and Katong and Joo Chiat. On Tyrwhitt Road, Chye Seng Huat Hardware at No. 150 has seats outside, and Hey Slow Joe at 1 Tessensohn Road serves 08:00–17:00 on weekdays and until 18:00 at weekends. Old Rochor Beancurd on Foch Road has outdoor tables and serves into the small hours.
In the east, the outdoor tables line Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road: Kings Cart Coffee Factory, Two Men Bagel House at 465 Joo Chiat Road, Neptune at 237 East Coast Road, Moocow, and Wan Mei at 11 East Coast Road, which serves until 22:30 and closes on Tuesdays.
Courtyards, the river, Dempsey and Sentosa
Punch, on North Canal Road near Clarke Quay, has an open courtyard at the back with wooden benches, greenery and a glimpse into the kitchen.5 Along the river, ÁTIPICO at 42 Kim Yam Road, and Lean & Rich and GREYBOX COFFEE at 81 Clemenceau Avenue, have outdoor tables.
For a late table in the open, ChoPSuey Café on Dempsey Road serves until 23:00 on every day of the week. On Sentosa, Baristart Coffee at 40 Siloso Beach Walk opens 10:00–17:00 daily, and in Bukit Timah, Atlas Coffee House on Duke's Road and Baker & Cook at 64 Namly Place, open until 22:00, both have outdoor seats.
When to sit outside
Humidity is highest before dawn and lowest in the afternoon.2 During the southwest monsoon, June to September, Sumatra squalls with gusts of 40–80 km/h can blow through between the predawn hours and midday.2
In the inter-monsoon months, a morning table is the safer bet. Bullock Cart Coffee in Kampong Glam opens at 07:30 on weekdays, Oaks Coffee Roasters at 619H Bukit Timah Road at 07:30 every day, and Kyūkei Coffee at 47 Malan Road, in the Bukit Merah and HarbourFront area, at 08:00.

A five-foot way is the covered walkway in front of Singapore's shophouses, a translation of the Malay kaki lima.
