Lavapiés is a historic neighborhood in the Embajadores ward of the Centro district, centered on Plaza de Lavapiés.1 The most accepted explanation of the name (wash-feet) is a popular one, tied to the steep slope down toward the Manzanares valley and its muddy streams; the writer Mesonero Romanos linked it to a large fountain on the plaza that stood until the late 19th century.2 Medievalists reject the legend of a Jewish quarter here.2

In the 19th century the area was full of factories, among them the royal tobacco factory, whose cigarreras (women cigar makers) were prominent in labor and feminist movements.2 Today it is a focus of immigration, especially from the Indian subcontinent, China, the Arab world and Senegal.1 Its cafés run from Tirso de Molina down Calle de Santa Isabel, Calle del Mesón de Paredes and Calle de Argumosa.

Local tip: Walk down Calle de Santa Isabel from Antón Martín: Caracolo, Zero Point Coffee and Dabov are all on the way, and Dabov opens at 08:00 on weekdays.

Getting to Lavapiés

Lavapiés station, on Metro line 3, is near the plaza.1 Tirso de Molina, at the top of the neighborhood, opened on 26 December 1921 under the name Progreso, on the first line of the Madrid Metro.3

The square above it, originally Plaza del Progreso, stands on the site of the demolished Convento de la Merced; its 2008 renovation widened the pedestrian area and added kiosks that make up a flower market.3 At the bottom of the hill, the Museo Reina Sofía fills Madrid's first General Hospital, designed by José de Hermosilla and Francisco Sabatini, and opened as a museum on 10 September 1992; Picasso's Guernica is its best-known work.4

Tabacalera and the corralas

The royal tobacco factory was built in 1781 on the orders of Carlos III; production began in 1809, and it employed about 6,000 workers across some 30,000 square meters.5 It closed in 1999 after the state tobacco monopoly was privatized, and since 2010 about a third of it has been La Tabacalera, a self-managed social center with workshops, a theater, a library, a bar and a courtyard garden.5

The corrala, a tenement built around a galleried courtyard, is the architectural emblem of 19th-century Lavapiés.2 The verbena (street festival) of San Lorenzo is the neighborhood's best-attended celebration.2
