Abierto hasta tarde, open late, means something different in a country where dinner runs from 20:30 to 23:00 and the merienda, an afternoon snack, comes around 18:00.1 A café that stays open until 22:00 or later covers the whole evening, from coffee after a lunch that usually starts around 14:00 to a cortado after dinner.1
Chocolatería San Ginés, in the Pasadizo de San Ginés off Puerta del Sol, opened in 1890 as an inn and became a churrería in 1894. It made its name with audiences leaving the nearby Teatro Eslava, and later with the crowd from the Joy Eslava nightclub.2 It now serves chocolate con churros around the clock.
Local tip: On a weeknight after 01:30, when the metro has stopped, La Mina on Calle de Francos Rodríguez is still open until 02:00, and the búhos night buses run until 06:00.34

Getting home after a late coffee
The metro runs every day from 06:00 to 01:30. It has stayed open all night only on special occasions, such as World Pride in summer 2017 and the snowstorm of January 2021.3 After it closes, the night buses known as búhos, owls, run from 23:45 to 06:00.4
Sitting outside has its own curfew: from November to mid-March every terrace has to be cleared by midnight, even where the room behind it stays open.5
