Fort is the old walled town on Colombo’s harbor, and Pettah is the market district just east of it. Pettah’s Sinhala name, pita-kotuwa, means “outside the fort”, and the English name, from the Tamil pettai for a suburb outside a fort, says the same.5 Fort runs on office hours, and Chatham Street’s eateries serve the working crowd of central Colombo at lunch.3

Most of Fort’s cafés sit within a few hundred meters of the Dutch Hospital, between Hospital Street and Chatham Street. Pettah’s coffee stop is a roaster: The Beans Coffee Roastery, on Old Moor Street, has roasted Sri Lankan arabica in Colombo since 2012.6

Local tip: Buy beans at The Beans on Old Moor Street on a weekday before 18:00, avoiding the Friday break from 12:00 to 13:30, then take them to Chatham Street for lunch.6

The Beans Coffee Roastery, at 24 Old Moor Street, buys arabica from Uva and Central Province, cleans, grades and hand-sorts it, roasts in small batches for espresso, filter and milk drinks, and tastes each batch over two days before it is packed.6

In October 2026 a 250 g bag of its Daily Grind medium-dark roast was on sale at Rs 2,990, down from Rs 3,250, ground to order.7 The shop opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–18:00 and closes from 12:00 to 13:30 on Fridays. Caroma Elite is at the Floating Market on Beira Lake.
