Specialty coffee in Colombo usually puts two kinds of bean on one menu: arabica grown on the island, often the Lak Parakum variety, and imported single origins. In a guide published in October 2024, Department of Coffee’s brew bar was pouring a washed Rwandan roasted by Azura in Oman, with notes of orange and grapefruit.3
Department of Coffee also claims the title of Sri Lanka’s first specialty café.1 It was launched in 2021 by the Sri Lankan specialty roaster J M Robertson & Co, had four stores at home by November 2024, and that month announced its first branch abroad, at the Sabco Shopping Centre in Muscat.2
Local tip: Order the Lak Parakum as a V60 at Department of Coffee to taste a Sri Lankan arabica black, then compare it with whatever imported single origin the brew bar has that day.3
Where these cafés are: Cinnamon Gardens (5), Fort & Pettah (3), Kollupitiya & Galle Face (2), Slave Island & Union Place (1).

At 10A Philip Gunawardena Mawatha, the brew bar makes V60, Kalita Wave, AeroPress and syphon coffee as well as cold brew and espresso drinks, and single origins are usually on offer.3 The café describes its beans as the home-grown Lak Parakum alongside coffee sourced from a range of roasters, so the filter list changes.1
Hours are long for a specialty bar: 07:00 to 23:00, every day. It also has Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and toilets, and does takeaway.
The Beans Coffee Roastery has roasted in the city since 2012, at 24 Old Moor Street in Pettah. Its arabica comes from Uva and Central Province, and every production batch goes through two days of quality-control tasting after roasting.5
A 250 g bag of its Daily Grind medium-dark roast was listed at Rs 3,250 and on sale for Rs 2,990 in October 2026, sold whole or ground for espresso, V60, French press or moka pot.6 The shop closes on Sundays.
Island Yaka Roasters sits on Galle Road at number 328, in Kollupitiya.
London House of Coffee, at 2B Srimath R. G. Senanayake Mawatha, was founded by a father and son who wanted to bring back the coffee culture of the mid-1800s. They grow organic coffee in the central highlands, and the café occupies a restored building with granite walls, dark wood, large sofas and an open-air balcony.4 It opens at 06:45.
The industry behind these cups is small but pushing for more. In 2025 the chair of the Lanka Coffee Association said specialty coffee “can be the next big thing for Sri Lankan coffee”, and about six in ten of the island’s coffee farmers are women.7
Most are in Cinnamon Gardens. Besides Department of Coffee and London House, Divide Specialty Coffee & Matcha has outdoor seats at 48A Ward Place, and Seed Café is at 60 Horton Place. Divide also runs a second café in Fort; Pettah has The Beans, and Kollupitiya has Island Yaka on Galle Road.
Away from these cafés, a 2024 guide found coffee hard to come by in Sri Lanka and instant the usual cup at breakfast.3
