Slave Island lies directly south of Fort, on the shores of Beira Lake.2 Since February 2023 its official name in Sinhala, Tamil and English has been Kompanna Veediya; the government dropped the colonial-era name, which recalls the African slaves held here under Portuguese rule, to mark 75 years of independence.1 Road signs, postal use and voter registers in Colombo 2 were all to switch.1
It is a traditional Malay district, and older shophouses stand between new towers.2 Cafés are spread thin: a few on Park Street, Union Place and Mutthaiah Road, and more inside office buildings on Nawam Mawatha and Sir James Peiris Mawatha, where Barista has several branches.
Local tip: At Ibson’s Choice the menu price already includes tax; a 10% service charge is added when you sit down and 5% on takeaway.7

Beira Lake began after 1518 as a Portuguese moat around the fort, and the Dutch, widening it, created Slave Island as one of several islands.3 It now covers about 65 hectares. Its green water and smell come from centuries of pollution and algae, and are worst in dry weather.3
On the lake itself, the Seema Malaka belongs to the Gangaramaya Temple, a few hundred meters to its west. Geoffrey Bawa rebuilt it in 1976 on three platforms joined by pontoon bridges, after the late-19th-century original sank into the water. S. H. Musaji and his wife paid for the rebuilding in memory of their son, and the pavilions are used for meditation more than worship.4
Park Street Mews, at 50/1 Park Street, turned a cobblestone cul-de-sac of run-down warehouses into a lane of restaurants and cafés, open daily 08:00–23:00.5 Park Street Gourmet is on the same street at 33B, open daily 09:00–21:00.
The shophouses on Justice Akbar Mawatha are where D. R. Wijewardene, D. S. Senanayake and Oliver Goonetilleke reportedly discussed the reforms that led to independence in 1948, though many of the district’s older buildings have since come down for high-rises.2 A one cafe is on the same street, and at Ibson’s Courtyard, also on Justice Akbar Mawatha, a Sri Lankan milk tea cost Rs 550 in October 2026.7
Grind, opened in 2018 by Mahesh Alkegama, takes one side of a business-complex lobby in Access Towers 2 and is built for meetings and office workers. Like his other cafés it serves Sri Lankan coffees alongside single origins from other countries.6 Nook Cafe is on Union Place, Chatz at 121a Sir James Pieris Mawatha, and The Potio Bakery & Cafe in the NDB-EDB Tower on Nawam Mawatha.
Ibson’s Choice Café 2.0, at 57 W A D Ramanayake Mawatha, is the bigger of the chain’s two Colombo 2 rooms and offers free Starlink Wi-Fi. The cafés are named after Ibson, the pocket cartoon that editor Rex de Silva drew for decades.7 Fika Deli, at 50A Mutthaiah Road, keeps long hours, 07:30–23:30 every day.

In February 2023, to mark 75 years of independence, the government replaced the colonial-era name with Kompanna Veediya in Sinhala, Tamil and English, on road signs, postal use and records. The old name referred to the area’s use under Portuguese rule as a holding place for African slaves.
