Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo 7, takes its name from the cinnamon plantation that once covered it; in Sinhala it is කුරුඳු වත්ත (Kurundu Watte).1 It is the city’s affluent district, home to the Town Hall, the National Museum, Independence Memorial Hall, the University of Colombo and most of the embassies.1

The cafés are on side streets more than main roads: Ward Place, Horton Place, Flower Road and Wijerama Mawatha each have several. This is also where to look for specialty coffee and for late hours. Department of Coffee, London House of Coffee and Divide are all here, and Peppermint Cafe never closes.

Local tip: Ask Department of Coffee for its Lak Parakum to taste a Sri Lankan arabica; if you need coffee after midnight, Peppermint Cafe on Wijerama Mawatha is open around the clock.7
