The Old Town runs down a ridge from Castle Rock, the remnant of an extinct volcano, in a crag-and-tail shape left by glaciers in the last ice age.1 Its spine is the Royal Mile, almost exactly a mile from the castle to Holyrood Palace, made up of the Castle Esplanade, Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, the Canongate and Abbey Strand, with steep closes (alleyways) dropping between the tenements.2

Coffee follows the slope. Castlehill and the Lawnmarket serve the crowds walking up to the castle, Cockburn Street and Market Street catch everyone climbing from Waverley Station, and the specialty bars have settled below the Grassmarket on West Port and Spittal Street. Together with the New Town, the Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.1

Local tip: For a quieter coffee near the castle, head down to West Port: The Coffee Mill Cafe opens daily at 07:30, and The Source is round the corner on Spittal Street.

Tearooms at the castle and the palace

Edinburgh Castle has two places to eat. The Tea Room sits in Crown Square, at the heart of the castle, and is best known for afternoon tea; the Redcoat Café serves soups and toasted deli sandwiches, with hot food daily from 11:30 to 15:30.3

At the other end of the Royal Mile, the Café at the Palace at Holyroodhouse occupies the former Palace Mews, with one wall made entirely of glass; it was highly commended at the Afternoon Tea Awards in 2018 and 2019.4 In between, Deacon's House Cafe at 304 Lawnmarket opens daily 09:30–16:00, Santu at 126 Canongate daily 08:00–16:00, and Clarinda's Tearoom at 69 Canongate from Tuesday to Sunday.

Cockburn Street and Market Street, up from Waverley

Cockburn Street opened in 1856 as a winding link from the High Street down to Waverley Station, which until then could be reached only by narrow, steep lanes; it is named after the judge Henry Cockburn, whose carved head is above No. 1.5 It has more cafés than any other Old Town street. The Edinburgh Press Club at Nos. 20–30 opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday, and The Milkman has two shops, at No. 7 and No. 52.6

Below it on Market Street, Gordon St Coffee at No. 6 roasts in the shop by sight and sound and sells its own Edinburgh Roast.6 It opens at 07:00 on weekdays and closes at 19:00. Mimi's Little Bakehouse is at No. 2, and the Fruitmarket Cafe at No. 45 opens daily 09:00–18:00.

Grassmarket, West Port and Spittal Street

The Grassmarket, in the hollow at the foot of Castle Rock, was one of Edinburgh's main markets from 1477 and a site of public executions; its pubs and restaurants now set tables on the pavement.7 Victoria Street climbs from its north-east corner by the West Bow, and Candlemaker Row, given to candle-makers by the magistrates in 1654, rises from the east end.7 Half-Cut Coffee is at 23 Candlemaker Row and the Elephant House at 28–30 Victoria Street.

West Port, the market's western edge, is now a coffee street. Bedrock at No. 13 is a minimalist room known for its espresso and fresh baking, and The Coffee Mill Cafe at Nos. 54–56 opens daily at 07:30.8 Round the corner at 4 Spittal Street, The Source, called Brew'd until early 2022, seats about half a dozen and pulls espresso on a Kees van der Westen machine.9

Museums, Fringe crowds and late hours

On Chambers Street, by the National Museum of Scotland, the Balcony Cafe opens daily 09:30–16:30 and the Museum Kitchen 10:00–17:00. Dovecot Studios, a tapestry studio founded in 1912, has kept a café in the former Infirmary Street Baths since 2008.10

In August the Fringe's street events take over the High Street between Cockburn Street and George IV Bridge. More than 500 buskers register, pitches are drawn from 10:00 each day, and the daily finale is at 17:15 on the Mound.11 Most Old Town cafés close by 17:00; The City Cafe on Blair Street and Chayan on South Bridge stay open until 22:00.
