Wi-Fi is easy to find in Edinburgh; a welcome for a laptop is less certain. Black Medicine at 2 Nicolson Street displays a polite no-laptop policy, and at Machina's Marchmont café some tables are kept laptop-free while others suit longer sessions.1 Beatnik on Brougham Place is a laptop-free zone.2 Lovecrumbs on the West Port, there since 2012, keeps its weekends laptop-free.3

Leith, Southside & Newington and Bruntsfield & Marchmont share the lead for cafés with Wi-Fi, with the Old Town next. Cockburn Street is the densest single street: Southern Cross Cafe at 63A, The Milkman at 52, The Wall at 45 and The Edinburgh Press Club at 20–30, which opens at 07:00 Monday to Saturday. Morningside Road has Cafe Vera at 26, RoundSquare Roastery at 132 and Café Blush at 219.

Local tip: If the cafés on Cockburn Street are full, the Central Library on George IV Bridge has 16 charging points and stays open until 20:00 Monday to Wednesday.5

Where a laptop session works

Cult Coffee Roasters at 104 Buccleuch Street has reliable Wi-Fi and enough table space for a longer stop.1 Levels Cafe & Lounge at 9C Holyrood Road has steady Wi-Fi and larger tables by the windows, and suits solo work.1 Levels opens 08:00–18:00 on weekdays and 09:00–16:00 on Saturdays, and is closed on Sundays.

Sockets are the scarcer resource. At Machina in Marchmont, expect competition for them at peak times; at August_21 on Causewayside only some seats have plugs, so bring a charger and headphones.1 The MF Coffee Shop at Summerhall has few plugs and limited seating, but no time limit on a table.4

Evenings are thinner. Black Medicine on Nicolson Street closes at 19:00 every day.

Milk at 21 Hawthornvale, near Newhaven, opens 09:00–15:00 Monday to Thursday and until 16:00 from Friday to Sunday.

Free Wi-Fi on George IV Bridge

Two libraries stand on George IV Bridge. The Central Library's Edinburgh and Scottish Collection has free Wi-Fi and study spaces with power outlets, including 16 charging points; it opens 10:00–20:00 Monday to Wednesday and 10:00–17:00 Thursday to Saturday.5

The National Library of Scotland's café has free Wi-Fi and food and drink. The building opens 10:00–19:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00–17:00 on Friday and Saturday, and is closed on Sundays; the café closes an hour earlier from Monday to Thursday. Joining the library, which opens the reading rooms, is free.6
