Stockbridge began as a small village outside Edinburgh and was absorbed into the city in the 19th century; the present Stock Bridge, a stone span over the Water of Leith, dates from 1801.1 The painter Henry Raeburn developed his Deanhaugh and St Bernard's estates here with the architect James Milne, and named Ann Street after his wife.1

Raeburn Place, the main road, has more cafés than any other street in the area, with Deanhaugh Street next. St Stephen Street, to the south, curves past Georgian basement flats with antique shops and bars at street level.1 Bakeries are part of the mix: Söderberg on Deanhaugh Street, The Pastry Section on Raeburn Place and Patisserie Florentin on North West Circus Place.

Local tip: On a Sunday, start at Stockbridge Market on Saunders Street from 10:00, then walk up to the Botanic Garden, where entry is free and the Terrace Café also opens at 10:00.67
