The West End is the Georgian district beyond the west end of Princes Street, bordered by Stockbridge and the Dean Village to the north and Tollcross and Fountainbridge to the south.1 Its centerpiece, Melville Street, was laid out in an 1808 plan and largely finished by the 1830s, and St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral nearby has a 90-meter spire, the tallest in the Edinburgh urban area.1

Below the Dean Bridge, the Dean Village sits in the gorge of the Water of Leith. Once called the Water of Leith Village, it milled grain for more than 800 years and at one time ran eleven mills.2 Thomas Telford was the engineer of the bridge above it, built in 1831–32 and opened in 1833.2

Local tip: Dean Village Coffee House on Belford Road opens at 08:30 every day; from Modern One, the steps behind the gallery lead down to the Water of Leith walkway.5
