Along the south bank of the Thames, the arts strip called the South Bank runs from County Hall to the Oxo Tower in Lambeth; east of it come Bankside, Borough and Bermondsey.1 Borough Market, at the southern end of London Bridge, dates back to at least the 12th century, and its present halls were designed by Henry Rose in 1851.2
The coffee centers on the market. Monmouth Coffee opened a stall in Borough Market in 1999 and a shop in a former fruit and vegetable warehouse there in 2001; in 2007 its roastery moved to three railway arches on Maltby Street in Bermondsey, and an arch selling coffee on Saturdays from 2009 started what became Maltby Street Market.3
Local tip: Borough Market's stalls are closed on Mondays except in December, but Monmouth's Park Street shop opens at 07:30 Monday to Saturday.2

Bermondsey Street was the center of London's leather trade, with Tanner Street, Morocco Street and Leathermarket Street; the Leather Market opened in 1833.4 Fuckoffee at No. 163 opens 07:00–19:00 on weekdays, and Eatalia at No. 94 opens at 07:00. By the river, on Shad Thames, whose name is a corruption of St John at Thames, Caffe Paradiso at No. 45 opens at 07:00 on weekdays.4
The name South Bank caught on during the 1951 Festival of Britain, and the Royal Festival Hall stayed when the festival closed.1 The Southbank Centre also takes in the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Hayward Gallery, with the National Theatre, the IMAX and BFI Southbank to the east; the London Eye opened in 2000.1
The Hayward Gallery Cafe on Belvedere Road is closed on Mondays and open until 20:00 on Saturday. BFI Café opens daily 11:00–20:00, and the Imax Cafe on Charlie Chaplin Walk, where there are power outlets, until 21:00. Behind Waterloo station, Lower Marsh has Balance at Nos. 42–43, open from 07:30 on weekdays, and Little Bread Pedlar at No. 20.
