Spitalfields and Whitechapel sit just east of the City in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.12 Brick Lane runs through both, from Bethnal Green to Whitechapel High Street, and is named after the brick and tile making that began here in the 15th century.2 Huguenot weavers arrived in the 17th century and Irish and Jewish families in the 19th; Bengali Muslims, many from Sylhet, later became the largest community.2

Markets set the week. Old Spitalfields Market, first licensed by Charles I in 1638, sold wholesale fruit and vegetables until that trade moved to Leyton in 1991, and now opens seven days a week.1 Brick Lane's Sunday market goes back to a 19th-century dispensation for the Jewish community.2 Hanbury Street, which links the two, has a run of coffee bars and roasters.

Local tip: Old Spitalfields holds its vintage market on Thursdays; Nude Coffee Roasters, around the corner on Hanbury Street, opens at 08:30 on weekdays.1
