Ballard voted to incorporate as a city on November 4, 1889, grew on shingle mills that made it the “Shingle Capital of America”, and became part of Seattle on May 29, 1907.1 It is the traditional center of Seattle’s Scandinavian community and holds a parade every May 17 for Syttende mai, Norway’s Constitution Day.1

Ballard Avenue NW, between NW Market Street and NW Dock Place, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since July 1, 1976; King Gustaf of Sweden read the proclamation.2 Cafés cluster on that street and along Market Street, where Caffè Umbria at 5407 Ballard Avenue and Miro Tea at 5405 share a block.

Local tip: Reach Ballard Avenue before 09:00 on a Sunday: the farmers market opens then, and Caffè Umbria at 5407 has been serving since 07:00.
