Capitol Hill has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, followed by the University District and Ballard; downtown, despite its office towers, has few. The hill’s list runs from Espresso Vivace on Broadway East and Analog Coffee on Summit Avenue East to Overcast Coffee Company at 1517 12th Avenue, which serves until 20:00 on weekdays.

Away from cafés, the Seattle Public Library gives free wireless access to anyone with a laptop or phone at all its locations during opening hours, on the spl-public network; its computers with internet are limited to two hours a day with a library card.1

Local tip: Ask for the Wi-Fi password at the counter when you order; if a café has no network, the nearest Seattle Public Library branch has free Wi-Fi on spl-public during opening hours.

Why one café switched its Wi-Fi off

In June 2005, Victrola Coffee & Art on 15th Avenue East stopped offering Wi-Fi at weekends. Its manager, David Latourel, told NPR that the café had been a community hub for the street, and that the network had ended people talking and sharing tables; some customers sat at tables without buying a drink.2

On the weekend NPR called, he said, about 90% of the seats were filled and there was not a laptop in the shop.2

Study cafés by the University of Washington

A Seattle Times guide says undergraduates fight over Café Allegro’s many seats, its upstairs patio included.3 Its Wi-Fi is one of many near campus: The Ugly Mug on NE 43rd Street, George Coffee and Pastries on NE 47th Street, which serves daily until 19:00, and Sip House on Brooklyn Avenue NE.

Inside the campus, the Husky Grind on Little Canoe Channel NE has Wi-Fi until 20:00 daily, and Evolutionary Grounds on West Stevens Way on weekdays. For late work, Café Happy at 1408 NE 40th Street has Wi-Fi and stays open until 01:00.

Working cafés in Fremont and Ballard

At Milstead & Co. in Fremont, most seating is communal, and The Infatuation rates the Wi-Fi and tables as good for working, including in teams.4 It opens at 06:00 on weekdays, and Fremont Coffee Company, a few blocks away, serves until 20:00 every day.

In Ballard, Miro Tea at 5405 Ballard Avenue NW has Wi-Fi and serves until 22:00 on weekdays, Artemis Coffee Co. at 5507 17th Avenue NW until 19:00, and Firehouse Coffee on NW Market Street until 16:00 on weekdays. Stone’s Throw Coffee & Market in Fremont, on North 45th Street, stays open until 20:00 Monday to Saturday.

Downtown and the waterfront

Downtown cafés with Wi-Fi include Storyville in the Corner Market building at Pike Place Market and The Shop by Porter at 1201 2nd Avenue, which serves until 19:00 on weekdays and 16:00 on Saturdays. Storyville’s market bar opens at 07:59 and closes on Tuesdays.

The library is the fallback: every branch broadcasts the free spl-public network during opening hours.1 Moore Coffee on 2nd Avenue, which opens Thursday to Sunday, also has Wi-Fi. In Belltown, Street Bean Espresso on 3rd Avenue has Wi-Fi and opens at 06:00 on weekdays.

Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
