Bowden, about 2 km northwest of the city center, was laid out as a village in 1839 by James Hurtle Fisher.1 Its modern form dates from 2008, when the state government bought the 10-hectare Clipsal factory site for A$52.5 million to build a walkable new district; Clipsal had made electrical fittings there since 1936.12 The population rose from 648 in 2006 to 1,808 in 2021.1
Hindmarsh, to the west, is older, and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre there marks the end of the tram line.3 Coffee costs more than the city norm: a flat white in Bowden averaged A$5.60 in October 2026.4

Second Street, Third Street and the town square
Bowden Town Square opened in 2016 with Plant 4, a commercial and retail building, and Plant 3, a community hub.2 A PLACE coffee, at 37 Second Street, sits beneath the Nightingale apartments and pours a Market Lane house blend from Melbourne with rotating guests such as Artificer from Sydney and Kindred from South Australia.5
My Grandma Ben, at 5 Third Street, cooks a mainly vegetarian, no-waste menu and doubles as a workshop space, selling jars of pickles and preserves to take home.6 It has outdoor tables.
Hindmarsh warehouses
Coffee in Common, at 7 Bacon Street, began as a café and roastery in Melbourne before the barista and roaster Sean Do brought it to Adelaide with his friend Dos Cavuoto.7 He roasts most of the coffee in the space out the back, and the list runs from house blends and a single origin to direct-trade lots and pour-over filter.5 It opens daily, closing at 11:00 on Monday and Tuesday and 14:30 the rest of the week.
Pony and Cole, at 6 Manton Street, keeps weekday hours, 07:30–15:30. D'Angelo Coffee, the long-standing Adelaide roaster whose beans East Borough uses in Parkside, is at 35 Cawthorne Street.8 On Port Road, Taste Revolution at 98 opens 07:00–14:30 on weekdays and from 08:00 on Saturday. Crave Specialty Coffee, at 15a Elizabeth Street, serves brunch and has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.
Bloom by the river
At the southern edge, Bloom occupies a converted tram barn beside the River Torrens on Winwood Street, Thebarton. It is run by the team behind Peter Rabbit in the CBD, uses beans from the Adelaide roaster 1645 and serves batch brew for A$8 in vintage mugs (2026).5 Its kitchen is wood-fired and it takes groups.6
Getting there
Bowden station is on the Grange and Outer Harbor train lines, and the tram runs from the Entertainment Centre through the city to Glenelg.13 The new streets were designed to be shared by people, bicycles and cars, and the first of them, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh streets and part of Gibson Street, opened in May 2013.12
For a coffee outdoors, Bowden Park opened in October 2016, and Parfit Square is the largest park in the suburb; the state also bought the neighboring Brompton Gasworks site in 2010 to extend the development.1
