Glenelg sits on Holdfast Bay about 9 km from the city center and is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia: Governor John Hindmarsh proclaimed the province at the Old Gum Tree in Glenelg North on 28 December 1836.1 The Kaurna called the area Pattawilya and the river Pattawilyangga, which survives as the Patawalonga, the river that meets the sea at Glenelg North.1 About 3,440 people lived in the suburb at the 2021 census.1

Jetty Road, the main shopping street, cuts across the suburb to the jetty and Moseley Square, where the old town hall, built as the Glenelg Institute and opened in 1877, now holds a museum and visitor center. The square is named after Henry J. Moseley, who put up several of the town's first public buildings.1 Coffee by the sea costs a little more: in October 2026 a flat white in Glenelg averaged A$5.35.2

Local tip: Stay on the tram to the Moseley Square terminus; the cafés on Moseley Street are a block from the stop.3
