Hyde Park, 3.5 km south of the city center, takes its name not from London but from John Hyde, who arrived in 1839; a tram served it until the 1950s.1 Its main street is King William Road, not to be confused with King William Street in the CBD, and it runs on through Unley.2 Unley Road, a parallel artery to the east, has its own run of cafés.

This is one of the dearer parts of town for a coffee: in October 2026 a flat white in the wider Unley area averaged A$5.36, against A$5.21 for Adelaide as a whole.3

Local tip: For an early start, Pickle In The Middle on Unley Road opens at 06:30 every day, an hour or more before most cafés on King William Road.

King William Road after the 2019 rebuild

The City of Unley rebuilt King William Road between Park and Mitchell streets and Arthur Street in 2019, finishing on 2 December, two months ahead of schedule.4 The new layout made room for dining on the street: the council issued 20 more outdoor dining permits, adding over 320 seats, and shop vacancies fell from 22 before the works to 7 by June 2020.4 The works also added two pedestrian crossings and new lighting, and were staged around 109 traders who stayed open throughout.4

He Said She Said at 173 has outdoor tables, and Majero's at 138, Hello Neighbour at 150, Aha! Cafe at 146–148 and Unley Social at 68 line the same stretch. At the northern end, ivia espresso and I have time sit at 27 and 23, and Coffee Culture is at 66. On Unley Road, Rosey's Unley is at 139, Bricks & Stones at 190C and Oak on Unley at 227–235.

Steven ter Horst and the sweet end of the street

It opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–17:00 and Sunday 12:00–17:00, and has outdoor seats. The kitchen was also meant for chocolate-making and cake-making classes, replacing an off-site kitchen in Kilkenny.5 Phoenix Sweets at 113–115 King William Road is a few blocks north, and Duthy Street, one block west, has Duthy Street Deli at 19–21 and Nature's Providore at 84.
