Leederville sits about 3 km north-west of the CBD, on land granted to William Henry Leeder in 1830; it had its own municipality from 1896 to 1914 and is now in the City of Vincent.1 Mount Hawthorn, about 5 km north of the center, began as the Hawthorn Estate, named by James Hicks after a stay in Hawthorn, Victoria, and was subdivided in 1903.2

Oxford Street ties the two together. It runs north from Leederville's cinema and shops into Mount Hawthorn, where Axford Park faces its corner with Scarborough Beach Road.2 Cafés line both streets: Cranked at 106 and Oxford Yard at 196 Oxford Street, The Tribute at 163 and Leaf And Bean Emporium at 180 Scarborough Beach Road.

Local tip: Ride the free Green CAT to Leederville station on a weekday morning, then walk up Oxford Street toward Mount Hawthorn; most cafés along the way close by 14:00.
