Highgate lies about 2 km north-north-east of central Perth and Mount Lawley about 4 km out, both along Beaufort Street.12 Mount Lawley is named after Sir Arthur Lawley, governor in 1901–02, whose wife is said to have agreed on the condition that no licensed hotels be built there.1 Highgate takes its name from a village near Hawkhurst in Kent.2

Local tip: Most Beaufort Street cafés close by 15:00; for a coffee later in the day, Cafe Guilty Pleasure at 634 Beaufort Street opens only in the afternoon and stays open into the evening.

The Astor and the old wetland
The Astor Theatre stands at 659 Beaufort Street, with Art Deco fronts to Beaufort and Walcott streets. It was built in 1914–15 as the Lyceum, redesigned by William Leighton and reopened as the State Theatre on 12 May 1939, and renamed the Astor in 1941, after a law barred private businesses from using the name "State".3 It reopened in October 2009 for music and comedy and has been on the State Register since 1999.3
Hyde Park was once the Boodjamooling wetland, a place where Noongar people camped, fished and met.1 Mount Lawley was proclaimed in 1901, after its estates were laid out between 1889 and 1901.1
