Perth bought freshly roasted coffee long before it had espresso bars. The grocer Henry Saw was selling it from patented roasting equipment by April 1852, and in 1908 a Perth paper condemned the city's licensed "coffee palaces" as "houses of the very worst description".2 The espresso habit arrived with post-war migration, when Australia took in more than 35,000 Italians between 1945 and 1951.2

Northbridge became its home. John Re opened The Re Store on the corner of Lake and Aberdeen streets in 1936; after the war it stocked Italian food, books and magazines for new arrivals and roasted coffee under Re's own Braziliano label.3 The store is credited with the conti roll (continental roll), a crusty roll packed with mortadella, coppa, salami, cheese and pickled vegetables, although the Di Chiera Brothers deli, opened in 1953, has its own claim.34

Western Australia's home-grown café chain began as a roaster, too. Phil May roasted Dôme's first batches in the mid-1980s on an antique French machine he had shipped from Melbourne; the first Dôme café opened in Cottesloe in 1991, and there are now more than 130 in six countries.5 In October 2026 the average flat white in Perth cost A$5.12, a cent under the national figure.1

Ordering, paying and timing coffee in Perth

Cup size moves the price more than the suburb does. Small Flat White's October 2026 figures put a small flat white at A$5.06, a regular at A$5.23 and a large at A$6.28, with oat, soy or almond milk adding about 84 cents; most cafés charged between A$4.50 and A$5.80.1 Since 1 October 2026 businesses may not add a surcharge to eftpos, Mastercard or Visa card payments, though American Express sits outside the ban.8

Tipping is optional. Australia's resistance to it rests on hospitality staff earning at least the minimum wage, and in a survey by the payments company Zeller, reported in December 2025, Western Australians left the smallest average tip per meal of any state, A$12.48.9 A few venues now add an automatic service charge to the bill; that is allowed only if you are told beforehand and can opt out.9

Coffee runs on an early clock that never shifts: Western Australia voted down daylight saving four times, most recently in 2009, and keeps standard time all year.12 About seven in ten cafés open by 07:00 on weekdays, two-thirds have stopped serving by 15:00, and close to half stay shut on Sundays. Perth also averages about 8.8 hours of sunshine a day, more than any other Australian capital.6

Getting between café streets is cheap. Every Sunday, Transperth buses, trains and ferries are free with a SmartRider or a contactless card; on other days a Go Anywhere fare of A$2.80–3.50 covers three hours of travel.10 In the city center the CAT (Central Area Transit) buses are always free.11 In summer, take the terrace early: the Fremantle Doctor, the south-westerly sea breeze, usually arrives between 10:00 and 15:00.7

Which Perth suburb has the most cafés?

CBD and Northbridge have the most cafés, followed by Subiaco. CBD cafés keep office hours: about half close for the whole weekend, and most stop serving by 15:00. Subiaco has the most cafés with outdoor tables, and most of its cafés open on Sundays.

What is a conti roll in Perth?

A conti roll, short for continental roll, is a crusty roll filled with mortadella, coppa, salami, cheese and pickled vegetables. It is credited to The Re Store, which John Re opened in Northbridge in 1936, though the Di Chiera Brothers deli, opened in 1953, also claims it. Re also roasted coffee under his own Braziliano label.

Do you tip at cafés in Perth?

Tipping is optional in Perth, because hospitality staff in Australia earn at least the minimum wage. In a survey by the payments company Zeller, reported in December 2025, Western Australians left the smallest average tip per meal of any state, A$12.48. A venue may add an automatic service charge only if it tells you beforehand and lets you opt out.

Is public transport free in Perth on Sundays?

Yes. Every Sunday, Transperth buses, trains and ferries are free for anyone using a SmartRider or a contactless card; you still tag on and off. On other days a Go Anywhere fare of A$2.80–3.50 covers three hours of travel, and the CAT buses in the city center are always free.

What time do cafés open and close in Perth?

Early. About seven in ten Perth cafés open by 07:00 on weekdays, and two-thirds have stopped serving by 15:00. Close to half stay shut on Sundays. Western Australia keeps standard time all year, having rejected daylight saving four times, most recently in 2009, so opening times never shift with the clocks.
