Northbridge lies about 1 km north of the CBD, across the railway that long divided it from the city; it was known as "north of the line" and was gazetted as a suburb of its own only in 1982.1 Greek and Macedonian migrants settled here around World War I, and the European arrivals of the 1950s and 1960s built the café, restaurant and bar life it is known for, with Italian migrants shaping its espresso bars.1
Coffee here splits by the clock. Breakfast cafés on James, Lake and William streets open early and close by mid-afternoon, dessert cafés on William Street take over from midday and serve until 22:00 or 23:00, and the galleries and museum of the Perth Cultural Centre have cafés of their own.
Local tip: For coffee after dinner, walk William Street between Superstar Waffles at 189 and Toctoc at 208; on Friday and Saturday both serve until 23:00.

The Re Store opened in 1936 at 105–107 Aberdeen Street, on the corner of Lake Street. After the war it became a home away from home for Italian migrants, selling Italian food, books and magazines, and John Re roasted coffee under a Braziliano label he designed himself; the brand is still poured in Perth cafés.2 The original building, in commercial use since 1897, appeared vacant by 2021. The Northbridge store now trades across the road at 72 Lake Street.2
That intersection is still the center of the suburb. The Northbridge Piazza, where James and Lake streets meet, screens free films, live music and sport, and Russell Square is the main park.1
Chet's Cafe at 67 James Street opens at 05:00 on weekdays and 06:00 on Saturdays, the earliest start in Northbridge. Little Willy's at 267 William Street opens at 06:00 every day; in 2024 Broadsheet counted nine years of trading and noted that everything except the bread is made on site.5 Little Bird Cafe, at 100 Lake Street, is a not-for-profit known for its cakes.5
The late shift is on William Street. Toctoc at 208 William Street serves 11:00–22:00 from Monday to Thursday and until 23:00 on Friday and Saturday, and Superstar Waffles at 189 keeps the same weekend close. Kumo opens at 12:00 and stays open until 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. Korean dessert cafés serving bingsu (shaved ice) cluster nearby; Perth Is OK named Hanabing, on Newcastle Street, as Perth's first Korean-style dessert café.6
Northbridge is a short walk from Perth station and the Busport, and the free Blue CAT bus runs along Fitzgerald and Aberdeen streets.1 Yagan Square, opened in March 2018 on the old railway yard west of Perth station, links the CBD to Northbridge across the tracks.1 The suburb's official edges are William, Roe and Newcastle streets and the Mitchell Freeway.1
The Perth Cultural Centre, bounded by Roe, Aberdeen, Beaufort and William streets, is technically in the suburb of Perth, but it sits on the Northbridge side of the railway.3 It holds the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the State Library, PICA in the former Perth Boys School and the State Theatre Centre.3 WA Museum Boola Bardip, Noongar for "many stories", reopened there on 21 November 2020, built around the Old Perth Gaol of 1855; Hackett Hall displays Otto, a blue whale skeleton.4
Livingstone's Urban Jungle, in Pod 2 of the Cultural Centre, opens at 06:30 on weekdays, Epoch Museum Cafe runs daily 07:00–15:30, and AGWA Cafe and Bar is open 10:00–17:00 except on Tuesdays. Coffee costs a little more on this side of the tracks: in October 2026 a flat white in Northbridge averaged A$5.19, seven cents above the Perth figure.7

The Re Store is an Italian deli that John Re opened in 1936 on the corner of Aberdeen and Lake streets.
