Avenue Louise (Louizalaan) was proposed in 1844, opened in 1866 and runs about 2.7 kilometers from Place Louise to the Bois de la Cambre.1 The City of Brussels annexed the land for it in 1864, which is why the avenue splits Ixelles into a smaller western part and a larger eastern one.2 Trams 8 and 93 run its full length, and Louise station serves metro lines 2 and 6.1

West of the avenue, the Châtelain quarter is named after the old châtellenie (castellany) of Ixelles, which answered to the castellan of Brussels.3 Rue du Bailli got its name in 1866, and the square is known for its Wednesday market.3 Brunch places, small specialty bars and evening cafés fill the streets between Chaussée de Charleroi and Chaussée de Waterloo.

Local tip: Hinterland on Chaussée de Charleroi closes on Wednesdays, the day of the Châtelain market, so plan a Wednesday afternoon around Stella or Jackie instead.8
