The European Quarter grew out of the Leopold Quarter, laid out on a grid from 1838 as a residential district named after King Leopold I.1 Changes to the Small Ring for the 1958 World's Fair made it attractive to companies, the first European institutions arrived in the late 1950s, and offices replaced most of the mansions.1 The district had about 500 residents in 1847 and 3,212 by 1853, most of them property owners with domestic staff.1
Place du Luxembourg, called Place Lux or Plux by EU staff and journalists, is flanked by the European Parliament.2 Brussels-Luxembourg railway station and the Schuman (lines 1 and 5) and Trône (lines 2 and 6) metro stations serve the area.2 Many cafés around the institutions keep office hours, and the squares to the south, in Etterbeek, carry the weekend trade.
Local tip: Many cafés around Rue d'Arlon close at weekends or by mid-afternoon; on a Sunday, head to Place Jourdan, where the market is on.3

Place de Londres (Londenplein) is small, sunny and pedestrian-friendly. Café Circus at number 7 pours craft beers and natural wines with toasted sandwiches, and Léopold Café Presse is known for breakfast, books and comics.3 Café Circus opens Monday to Saturday from 12:00 to 01:00.
East of Place Jourdan, Etterbeek's own centers are quieter. Urkunina Specialty Roasters has a bar at Chaussée Saint-Pierre 9, open Monday to Saturday 09:00–15:00, and another on Cours Saint-Michel. Jeff's Coffee is on Place Saint-Pierre, Kapa Specialty Coffee & Bakery opens Tuesday to Sunday from 07:00, and Art's & Bagels opens at 06:45 on weekdays.
