Saint-Gilles (Sint-Gillis) covers 2.53 square kilometers and had 48,827 registered residents in January 2025; among its largest foreign communities are the French, the Portuguese and the Spanish.1 Several Art Nouveau houses in its upper part, including Victor Horta's own home on Rue Américaine, now the Horta Museum, have been World Heritage Sites since 2000.1
Brussels-South, the busiest railway station in Belgium, sits at the municipality's northern tip.1 From there the streets climb past the Parvis to the town hall on Place Maurice Van Meenen and on to the Barrière, named after the toll roads that replaced a 17th-century fort.1 Each of these squares has its own terrace cafés.
Local tip: Pardon on Rue de Moscou opens every day from 10:30 to 17:30 and suggests booking ahead.6
