Leblon lies between the Jardim de Alah canal, the Lagoa and Morro Dois Irmãos, covers 2.15 km² and had 46,044 residents in 2010; its property prices are among the highest in Brazil.1 It is named after Carlos Leblon, a whaling businessman of French origin who farmed here from 1845, and part of it was a quilombo (settlement of escaped slaves) founded by the abolitionist landowner José de Seixas Magalhães, who grew camellias, the flower of the abolition movement; the settlement reportedly had the protection of Princess Isabel.1

The canal on its eastern edge was built in 1920 under mayor Carlos Sampaio.2 From the 1970s the blocks between Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva, Rua Dias Ferreira and Rua Aristides Espínola became Baixo Leblon, a run of bars where Cazuza, Miguel Falabella, Elba Ramalho and Alceu Valença met. The name refers to that concentration of bars, an itinerário etílico (drinking route), and it was the first place in Rio to be called a “baixo”.2

Local tip: Start at Antero de Quental station, buy palmiers at Confeitaria Kurt on Rua General Urquiza, then walk to Rua Dias Ferreira for a coffee before the bars of Baixo Leblon fill up.
