Botafogo curves around a cove of Guanabara Bay sheltered by the Urca peninsula and Sugarloaf Mountain. It is named after João Pereira de Sousa Botafogo (1540–1627), who ran the artillery of a galleon called Botafogo. Land here was parceled out from 1702, mansions followed by 1808, and a ferry in 1867 and horse-drawn trams from 1871 made it a suburb; 82,890 people lived here in 2010.1

Humaitá, inland toward the Lagoa, is tied to Botafogo by three streets, Rua Voluntários da Pátria, Rua Humaitá and Rua São Clemente, with Corcovado behind them.2 Voluntários da Pátria carries the area’s longest run of cafés, from the bay end of Botafogo to the Cobal.

Local tip: Walk Rua Voluntários da Pátria from Botafogo station toward Humaitá and end at the Cobal; Le Dépanneur at number 86 serves until 22:00, or 23:30 on Saturday.
