The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas covers 2.4 million square meters, ringed by a 7.5 km cycle path and by Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea, Jardim Botânico, Copacabana, Botafogo and Humaitá; it hosted the rowing and canoe sprint at the 2016 Olympics.1 It is named after Rodrigo de Freitas de Carvalho, a Portuguese cavalry officer who married Petronilha Fagundes in 1702, and the Tamoio called it Piraguá, “still water”.1
West of the water, Jardim Botânico grew around the garden founded by João VI in 1808.2 Gávea, named by Estácio de Sá in 1565 after the sail-shaped Pedra da Gávea, has PUC-Rio, the Hipódromo and the bar quarter of Baixo Gávea.3

The botanical garden and Rua Jardim Botânico
The garden opened to the public in 1822. Its Avenue of Royal Palms runs 750 m from the entrance, lined with 134 palms all descended from a single tree, the Palma Mater, later destroyed by lightning; the collection runs to about 6,500 species.2 The arboretum opens Thursday to Tuesday 08:00–17:00 and Wednesday 11:00–17:00, and tickets can be bought in advance online.4
Garden Café is at Rua Jardim Botânico, 1008, Green Garden at 1003, Plage Cafe at 414, and Guerin is on the same road.
Parque Lage
Parque Lage lies at the foot of Corcovado. Its garden, laid out by John Tyndale around 1840, has an artificial grotto with aquarium tanks, and the mansion, remodeled in the 1920s by Mario Vodret for the industrialist Henrique Lage and the singer Gabriella Besanzoni, holds the Escola de Artes Visuais and a public café.5 It has been a public park since the 1960s, with trails into the forest, and IPHAN, the national heritage institute, listed it on 14 June 1957.5
Rua Pacheco Leão and the Horto
Jojô, at Rua Pacheco Leão, 812, is the late one. It opens at 13:00 on Monday, Friday and Saturday and at 17:00 Tuesday to Thursday, and closes at 20:00 on Monday, midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday and 01:00 Thursday to Saturday. Casa Carandaí is at Rua Lopes Quintas, 180.
Gávea and the Lagoa side
In Gávea, Talho Café is at Rua Marquês de São Vicente, 10, Carioquices Café has a kiosk on the second floor of Shopping da Gávea at number 52, and Cafeteria Mr. Ali is at 225. Enredo Cafe is at Rua Maria Angélica, 171, and Garagem das Letras da Rocinha at Rua Dionéia, 11.
Further up the same street, the Instituto Moreira Salles occupies the house that Olavo Redig de Campos designed in 1948 for the ambassador Walther Moreira Salles, at Rua Marquês de São Vicente, 476, on about 10,000 square meters of Atlantic Forest with gardens by Roberto Burle Marx; it became a cultural center in 1999, and in October 2026 its website listed it as temporarily closed for renovation.6
On the Lagoa side, Confeitaria Santa Marta bakes at Rua Fonte da Saudade, 241. In the holiday season a giant Christmas tree floats on the lagoon and moves around it.1 The Estádio da Gávea, Flamengo’s ground, is in fact on the Lagoa side, and Gávea hosted Grand Prix motor racing in the 1930s and 1940s.3
