Flamengo and Catete line the bay between Glória and Botafogo, and Laranjeiras climbs the valley behind them toward Cosme Velho. Laranjeiras is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, with country houses built in the 17th century along the Carioca River, in what was once called the Vale do Carioca.1
Catete was the seat of power until 1960. The Palácio do Catete, built for the coffee grower António Clemente Pinto, Baron of Nova Friburgo, housed the presidency from 1897 until the capital moved to Brasília; Getúlio Vargas shot himself there in 1954, and it now holds the Museu da República.2 President Afonso Pena died there in 1909, and Brazil declared war on the German Empire from it in 1917.2
Local tip: Pair the Saturday-morning market on Rua General Glicério with a coffee in Laranjeiras, then take Rua Cosme Velho uphill to the Corcovado train, which leaves about every 20 minutes.
