Old Montreal is where the city began, as Fort Ville-Marie, founded by French settlers in 1642.1 Its historic limits run from Rue McGill to Rue Saint-André, between the old line of the fortifications and the St. Lawrence River, and most of it was classified as a historic district in 1964.1

Rue Saint-Jacques was Canada's financial center in the 19th century and is still lined with old bank buildings, and the Saint-Sulpice Seminary, beside the basilica on Place d'Armes, is the oldest building left standing in Montreal.1 Champ-de-Mars, Place-d'Armes and Square-Victoria–OACI stations serve the district.1

Local tip: Notre-Dame Basilica draws about 11 million visitors a year;2 for coffee before the crowds, Café Olimpico at 419 Rue Saint-Vincent opens at 06:00.6
