The Plateau is small and crowded: 105,813 people lived on its 8.1 km² in 2021, which makes it one of the most densely populated boroughs in Canada.1 Sherbrooke Street marks its southern edge and the Canadian Pacific tracks its northern one. In the early 20th century it was a working-class district, largely francophone in the east, and it has gentrified since the 1980s.1
Its cafés sit on a grid of shopping streets with quiet residential blocks in between. Rue Saint-Denis has the most, then Avenue du Mont-Royal, with Laurier, Boulevard Saint-Laurent, Rachel and Duluth behind them. Sherbrooke, Mont-Royal and Laurier stations on the orange line cover the borough.1
Local tip: On a summer weekend, walk Avenue du Mont-Royal while it is closed to cars4 and start at Le Grand Cormoran at 1034 Mont-Royal Est, open from 08:00 every day.
