Saint-Henri was once called Les Tanneries, after the leather tanners who worked here; it became a municipality in 1875 and joined Montreal in 1905.1 The Lachine Canal forms its southern edge, and its factories made it a working-class district, the setting of Gabrielle Roy's novel Bonheur d'occasion (The Tin Flute).1

Since the early 2000s it has gentrified, with condos, restaurants, shops and cafés.1 Its cafés gather on Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, between the 2400 and 3400 blocks, and Myriade Roasting Co., which supplies the Café Myriade shops, roasts in the neighborhood.2

Local tip: Start at September Café, 2471 Notre-Dame Ouest, from 07:00 on weekdays, then walk to Atwater Market and cross its footbridge to the canal bike path.3

Atwater Market

Atwater Market opened in 1933 in an Art Deco hall by Ludger Lemieux and his son Paul, on Atwater Avenue near Greene Avenue and the canal.3 Butchers and a Première Moisson bakery work inside, there are two cheese shops, a wine store and a fish shop, and farmers sell local and imported produce from stalls outside.3

A footbridge crosses the canal from the market to Rue Saint-Patrick and the bike path in Pointe-Saint-Charles, which makes it a stop for cyclists in summer. Lionel-Groulx and Charlevoix are the nearest metro stations.3

Factories on the canal

The settlement here dates from 1685.1 Its later industry included the first Canadian factory space of the Victor Talking Machine Company, which made flat discs, gramophones and radios, and military equipment during the Second World War.1 The Lachine Canal Manufacturing Complex, the industrial buildings along the water, was designated a national historic site in 1996.4 Atwater Avenue, on the district's eastern side, has carried the name of Edwin Atwater, an alderman for the Saint-Antoine ward, since 1871.3

Jazz, the canal and the metro

Oscar Peterson grew up in neighboring Little Burgundy, and his 1964 piece "Place St. Henri" was inspired by the bustle of a nearby passenger rail station.1 Place-Saint-Henri and Lionel-Groulx stations serve the district today.1 Little Burgundy, Peterson’s neighborhood, starts on the far side of Avenue Atwater and runs east to Rue Guy.5

The canal along the southern edge closed to shipping in 1970 and has carried pleasure boats again since 2002; its towpath and bike path run past the old factories toward Lachine.4
