Mile End has no official borders; it is usually taken to run from Avenue du Mont-Royal north to Avenue Van Horne, between Rue Hutchison and Rue Saint-Denis.1 The name probably comes from the East London district, and it appears in Stanley Bagg's advertisements in the Gazette in 1815. The town of Saint-Louis-du-Mile-End joined Montreal on 1 January 1910.1
This was the main Jewish district of Montreal until the 1950s, and the Hasidic community still keeps a visible presence here and in neighboring Outremont; Greek and Portuguese families followed.1 Since the 1980s it has been known for its artists and musicians, and Ubisoft opened its Montreal studios here in 1997.1
