Downtown Montreal is built around Rue Sainte-Catherine, its main commercial artery, with McGill University's main campus north of Sherbrooke Street and Concordia's Sir George Williams Campus to the west.1 By law no tower may rise higher than Mount Royal; the two tallest, 1000 de La Gauchetière and 1250 René-Lévesque, were both finished in 1992.1

Downtown had 109,509 residents in 2021, up 24.2% in five years,1 but most of its cafés keep office hours. Many open at 07:00 or 07:30 on weekdays and later at weekends, and the counters inside office towers, such as Kiosk café at 1010 De La Gauchetière Ouest, close by mid-afternoon and stay shut on weekends.

Local tip: In winter, walk between towers through RÉSO, which has more than 120 street entrances;5 Café Olimpico at 1333 Robert-Bourassa is open from 06:00 every day.6
