This area takes in the office towers of the Financial District and, to the east, St. Lawrence and the Distillery District. Much of its coffee is sold underground: the PATH links more than 75 buildings, six subway stations and Union Station through more than 30 km of mostly underground walkways, with about 1,200 restaurants, shops and services.1 More than 200,000 commuters use it on a business day.1
East of Yonge Street the buildings get older and lower. St. Lawrence Market has traded at Front and Jarvis streets since a market day was proclaimed in 1803, and its South Market building dates from 1845.2 Further east, the Gooderham and Worts distillery, founded in 1832, left more than 40 heritage buildings that reopened to the public as the Distillery District on 22 May 2003.3
Local tip: St. Lawrence's Saturday farmers market opens at 05:00, before the cafés around it;8 Rooster Coffee House at 343 King Street East is the nearest that opens at 07:00 every day, and Dipped Donuts on Front Street East matches it on Saturdays.

Coffee in the PATH
The first tunnel was Eaton's, dug under James Street in 1900; the network grew through the 1960s and 1970s, and the City took over coordinating it in 1987.4 It is open around the clock, though some entrances have shorter hours or close at weekends. The old color-coded compass signs gave way from 2018 to signs naming neighborhoods and landmarks, a change finished across all buildings in 2024.4
Coffee down here follows the office day. On a September 2025 tour of downtown cafés, a large drip at Daily Ritual in One King West cost $3.25, a small black coffee at Dual Citizen in the Sheraton Centre $5, and a coffee and muffin at Café Plenty in Commerce Court $5.5 Daily Ritual opens at 07:00 on weekdays and 08:00 at weekends.
Roaster cafés around King and Bay
No part of the city has more specialty coffee bars than this one. Pilot Coffee Roasters has counters at 302 Bay Street and 65 Front Street West, Dark Horse at 13 York Street and 110 Queens Quay East, and Dineen at 140 Yonge Street, 200 King Street West and two Bay Street addresses. Mos Mos, founded in 2014, has four outlets here.6
Sam James Coffee Bar, which counted the PATH among its four Toronto bars in 2026, is at 150 King Street West, open Monday to Friday 07:00–16:00.7 Among the earliest openers are Found Coffee at 225 Front Street West, from 06:00 every day, then Dineen at 140 Yonge Street and Mos Mos at 25 King Street West, both from 06:30 on weekdays.
St. Lawrence Market and Front Street East
The South Market opens Tuesday to Friday 09:00–19:00, Saturday 07:00–17:00 and Sunday 10:00–17:00, and closes on Mondays.8 The rebuilt North Market at 92 Front Street East brought the Saturday farmers market back in April 2025; it runs 05:00–15:00.28 National Geographic named St. Lawrence the best food market in the world in April 2012.2
A row of small counters faces the market on Front Street East: Café Moroc at 49, Luba's Gourmet Coffee & Tea at 91 and Dipped Donuts at 93, which opens at 07:00 on Saturdays. Rooster Coffee House at 343 King Street East opens at 07:00 every day and stays open until 20:00 on weekdays.
The Distillery District
The district is mostly closed to cars, with Trinity Street as its widest street and public square, and the owners who bought the site in 2001 chose not to lease space to chains or franchises.3 Arvo Coffee and Cacao 79 are on Gristmill Lane, and Arena Coffee Bar at 15 Tank House Lane opens daily 10:00–19:00. The outdoor Christmas Market has been held here every year since 2010, except 2020.3
