Roncesvalles takes its name from the 1813 Battle of Roncesvalles in Spain, where Colonel Walter O'Hara led a regiment against Napoleon's retreating army; nearby Sorauren Avenue is named after another battle he fought in.1 The neighborhood has long been the center of Polish Toronto: St. Casimir's parish was founded in 1944, and every September the Roncesvalles Polish Festival closes the avenue to traffic.1

Parkdale, to the south and east, was a village from 1879 until Toronto annexed it in 1889. The Gardiner Expressway, begun in 1955, cut it off from the lake and took the southern part of the neighborhood. Since the late 1990s a large Tibetan community has made its stretch of Queen Street West known as Little Tibet.2

Local tip: In cherry blossom season, late April to early May, High Park fills early;6 Affect Coffee at 283 Roncesvalles Avenue and Cabin Fever Collective at 1669 Bloor Street West both open at 07:00 every day.
