King Street was one of the first streets in the 1793 plan of York, and King West is now Toronto's Fashion District, known for restaurants, design shops and condos.1 Between Bathurst and Jarvis streets, cars cannot drive straight through intersections or turn left, a transit-first rule made permanent on 16 April 2019; the 504 King streetcars carried about 65,000 passengers a day in 2018.1
Further west, Liberty Village lies between King Street, Dufferin Street, the Gardiner Expressway and Strachan Avenue. Railway lines cut it off from the 1850s, so the land went to the Central Prison, opened in 1873, and to factories such as John Inglis and Massey-Harris. After the plants closed in the 1990s, artists moved in, then lofts, offices and condos.2
Local tip: Mado Café & Bakery at 440 Front Street West serves until 21:00 most nights and 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, later than most King West cafés; Parisco Cafe on Fort York Boulevard stays open until 20:00 every day.
