Mohandessin, Egyptian Arabic for the engineers, was farmland of the Ministry of Awqaf (religious endowments) called Madinat al-Awqaf until the architect Mahmoud Riad fixed its plan in 1948. After 1952 the plots went at subsidized prices to housing cooperatives of professional syndicates, and the engineers' cooperative gave the district its name.1 Since 1997 it has been split between the Agouza and Dokki districts.1
Dokki grew from a village on a royal and state-owned endowment estate into villa neighborhoods, and it now has about 56 embassies, second only to Zamalek, and about 102 schools.2 Cafés here follow the main roads: Arab League Boulevard, Midan Amman, Ahmed Orabi and Lotfy Hassouna streets, and El Tahrir Street in Dokki.
Local tip: For coffee to take home, Orouba on El Tahrir Street in Dokki sells its own blends ground fresh, plain or with cardamom.4
