Maadi takes its name from meʿaddeyya, the Arabic word for ferry, after the boats that crossed the Nile here; there is still no bridge at Maadi.1 The modern district dates from 1904, when the Cairo–Helwan railway arrived, and was shaped by the Mosseri cousins' land deals and the plans of Captain Alexander J. Adams, a retired Canadian officer.1

Its cafés gather in two places: Road 9, the shopping street, and the numbered streets of Degla, especially 232 and 233. Maadi also has more cafés with outdoor seating than any other part of Cairo, spread over the shaded streets of Sarayat and Degla.

Local tip: Café Greco on Road 9 sells beans by weight, including Kenyan and Costa Rican coffees, if you want some for home.2
