Nasr City, whose name means victory city, was laid out in the 1960s as an extension of Heliopolis. President Gamal Abdel Nasser chose the name, and the architect Sayed Karim planned it on a grid; it was first imagined as a new capital and became a suburb instead.1 Many of its original houses have given way to dense towers, and its two districts counted 707,000 residents in 2017.1
Gulf-influenced lifestyles are prominent here, partly because many migrant workers settled in Nasr City on their return from the Gulf.1 Café life runs street by street, led by Abbas el-Akkad Street, which is known for its nightlife, cafés and shops.2
Local tip: Partido on Abd El-Latif Hamza Street has Wi-Fi and stays open until 02:00, well after the malls, which close at 23:00 (midnight on Thursdays and Fridays).5
