Outdoor cafés in Cairo
Groppi's garden, Maadi's terraces and sidewalk ahwa in Garden City and Shubra.
Cairo's weather decides when an outdoor table works. Winter highs run from 14 to 22 °C, while summer highs often pass 31 °C and average 35 °C in July; the city gets about 25 mm of rain a year, on roughly 11 days.1 Saharan dust storms blow in between March and May, and the summer months are humid because the Mediterranean coast is near.1
Maadi has the most cafés with outdoor seating, close to half of them, followed by Downtown. Zamalek, Nasr City and Garden City have a couple each, and Giza and Shubra one apiece.
Local tip: In summer, take an outdoor table at opening time: Zen Specialty Coffee in Maadi and both Groppi branches downtown open at 07:00.

Maadi's terraces
Maadi's older quarters are green: El Sarayat is a district of villas and low-rise buildings, and a promenade follows the Nile along the Corniche.2 On Road 9, Kiro Coffee Shop at No. 34 and Rustic, open 10:00 to 02:00, put tables outside. Zen Specialty Coffee on Street 233 opens 07:00 to 01:00, and Hara 8 (حارة 8) on Degla Square stays open 24 hours, both with outdoor seats.
Floating Cups, at 4 Street 21, serves brunch outdoors from 07:00 to 19:00. Miette French Bakery at 14 Street 209, Koupa at 13 Street 18 and Dark Solutions on Street 218 also have outside tables. Huff Board Game Café on Street 206 adds board games until midnight, El Qahwa Khan on Orabi Street adds Wi-Fi, and Bike Yard Cafe at 29 Mostafa Kamel Street allows smoking outside.
Downtown: a garden and the sidewalks
Downtown's tables have long spilled outdoors. On the al-Bustan al-Sa'idi passage off Talaat Harb Street, café chairs had taken over the former parking spaces by the 1970s, turning a side street into a pedestrian passage.3
Groppi's garden hosted musical evenings and foreign bands and became home to Egypt's first outdoor cinema.4 Both Groppi branches, on Talaat Harb Square and on Abdel Khalek Tharwat Street, open 07:00 to 01:00 with outdoor seats. Jarat Al-Qamar, at 4 Hussein Pasha al-Me'mari Street, seats smokers outside, BTTR MRNGS is on Mansour Street, and Expresso keeps its outdoor tables open 24 hours.
Zamalek, Garden City and beyond
In Zamalek, Auntie Loulou on Ahmed Heshmat Street opens 08:00 to midnight and FOAM on Sheikh al-Marsafi Street 08:00 to 21:00, both with tables outside. Garden City's outdoor ahwa include Qahwet al-Fallah (قهوة الفلاح) on Ittihad al-Mohamin al-Arab Street and Qahwet Alaa el-Din (قهوة علاء الدين) at 15 Fatma Youssef Street.
Nasr City has Garnet Coffee at 9 Omar Ibn al-Khattab Street and tigo coffee shop at 3 Hafez Ramadan Street, which also has Wi-Fi. In Giza, zed is at 7 Gameat al-Qahira Street, and in Shubra, Café al-Mahrousa (كافيه المحروسه) is at 144 Shubra Street.
Timing an outdoor table
Rain rarely gets in the way, though sudden winter showers can flood streets.1 Since 26 April 2026, cafés may open at 05:00 and serve until 01:00, so the cooler early and late hours are both available.5 In summer, the terraces that open at 07:00, such as Zen Specialty Coffee and Floating Cups in Maadi and both Groppi branches downtown, catch the coolest part of the day.
