One Accra roaster names its drinks after the city's neighborhoods. Jamestown Coffee Company, whose logo shows the Jamestown lighthouse above the words "Made in Ghana", roasts beans from the Volta Region and opened its first café in late 2020 in the Osu warehouse where it had been roasting.1 Ask for a Kaneshie, espresso with sweetened condensed milk, or a Labadi iced latte, the same over crushed ice; the staff suggest trying both before an Americano.1

Old Accra has its own café. Jamestown and Usshertown grew up around the 17th-century James Fort and Ussher Fort and are the city's oldest districts.2 On High Street, Jamestown Café fills a restored building that the architect Joe Addo built and owns, with art exhibitions, live music and an outdoor space for food and cocktails.3 ArchiAfrika, the design and architecture gallery Addo champions, is across the road in a building from 1915.4

For most people the day starts elsewhere. Time Out notes that Ghanaians tend to breakfast on something savory or on a plain combination of tea, bread and egg.5 Some places carry the drink in their names: God's Time The Best Tea Canteen in Achimota opens Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00, while Big Apple cafe on Kolente Street, in the same part of town, never closes.

How coffee works in Accra

Menus follow espresso-bar lines, with sweet and tea-based drinks alongside. At D Cafe in Airport Residential, an espresso costs GH₵35 and a cappuccino GH₵45, and soy or almond milk adds GH₵5.6 Café Kwae at One Airport Square leans on tea: its chai latte is GH₵60, a turmeric latte GH₵55 and a homemade hot ginger tea GH₵35.7

Bring cedis. Easy Track Ghana calls the country basically a cash society: cards work at upscale places in Accra, mobile money (MoMo) is a very common way to pay, and many sellers can't break a GH₵200 note or even a GH₵20.8 A tip is a dash, as in "let me dash you something".8 Tips aren't always expected at chop bars (local eateries), but 10% is a fair guide at upscale restaurants that add no service charge.9

Ghana keeps Greenwich Mean Time all year and has no daylight saving, so opening hours never shift with the seasons.10 For laptop work, Kukun in Osu opens its ground-floor café to anyone who wants to spend the day working, and rents offices and flexible desks on the floors above.11

Most taxis run without meters, so agree on the fare before you get in; Uber and Yango are the app-based alternatives, and tro tros (shared minibuses) run set routes between designated stops.12
