East Legon takes its name from the University of Ghana at Legon, which lies to its west. The suburb sits about 13 km northeast of central Accra, bounded by the Tema Motorway, Legon and Madina, with the East Legon hills farther east, and it is home mostly to middle- and upper-income residents.1
The university came first: it was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast and took its present name in 1961, when it gained full university status.2 It sits on the west side of the Legon Hills and has more than 60,000 registered students.2 East Legon's cafés are spread out rather than clustered, from Selfieccino at 2 Boundary Road and The Pink Kafe at 348 Fourth Street to Dough Man Foods Xcafe on La Bawaleshi Road.
Local tip: Order a box at Dough Man Foods Xcafe on La Bawaleshi Road: artisan doughnuts are the bakery's specialty, and the café has Wi-Fi and outdoor tables.6

Lagos Avenue is named after the Nigerian city, and part of it unofficially honors the footballer Abedi Pele; other streets carry fruit names, such as Aluguntugi, the soursop.1 Mempeasem and Bawaleshie are small neighboring towns, and the A'n'C Shopping Mall and the Lizzy Sports Complex are the suburb's main places to shop and play.1 Families come for the schools, among them L'Ecole Francaise, the American International School and the British International School.1
The airport is about an 11-minute drive away, and the suburb covers 4.95 km².3 Power and water supplies used to be erratic, which is why so many East Legon homes have their own generators and water tanks.1 The suburb has its own police station, and meQasa rates crime here as relatively low for Accra.1
Accra Mall, near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and next to the Tema Motorway, opened on 4 July 2008 as Ghana's first fully enclosed mall. The interchange replaced the Akuafo Circle, then the largest roundabout in Ghana, and opened to traffic on 27 February 2005.5
